The rights of way and access project involved assessing the current layout in terms of where the public could go, the location’s relationship with the existing access network and surrounding communities, an appraisal of opportunities and constraints, and widespread public consultation with existing recreational groups and those people who stood to benefit from the development.
“Reclamation of a former coal site and industrial area presented exciting new conservation and recreation opportunities.”
Among the recommendations were new public transport links (including river transport), improved and waymarked walking and cycling connections with surrounding communities, a programme of themed nature walks and health walks, and a joined-up approach involving all local authorities and agencies working together for both nature and people.
